Chiang Mai Samlor Evening Tour

Enjoy Chiang Mai after dark in a traditional samlor – Private Tour

The Chiang Mai Evening Temple and Food Tour by samlor is a lovely way to explore the quiet backstreets of Chiang Mai in the early evening. The traffic is light and the temperature is very pleasant. Enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the early tropical evening. Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang are beautifully illuminated. There is still a lot of activity at the colorful flower market along the Ping River. Thanks, Philip van Driesten and Kevin Landwer-Johan for the pictures.

Chiang Mai Samlor Evening Tour

Beautiful Wat Phra Singh during sunset

Your Chiang Mai samlor Evening tour will start at Wat Phra Singh at 1800 where your samlor drivers and guide will wait for you. The samlor is the traditional bicycle taxi. First, we will visit Wat Phra Singh which is a beautiful temple in the early evening light. Next up is Wat Phra Singh, which is probably Chiang Mai’s most revered temple. Wat Phra Singh currently houses Phra Chao Thong Tip, the most venerated Buddha statue in northern Thailand. We take our time to make some pictures. Then get into your samlor for a pleasant and relaxing ride through Chiang Mai’s backstreets in the coolness of the early evening.

Wat Inthakin and the Three Kings Monument

We make our way towards the Three Kings monument, which is in front of the Chiang Mai City Arts and Culture Centre. It is housed in a building that dates back to 1924 and served as the Provincial Hall of Chiang Mai province in the past. The Three Kings are King Mangrai of Chiang Mai, King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, and King Ngam Meuang of Phayao, who forged an alliance to found Chiang Mai in 1296. Next to this is Wat Inthakin, the temple of the ancient City Pillar which is now in nearby Wat Chedi Luang, which is our next destination.

Wat Chedi Luang, the temple of the big pagoda

From the Three Kings Monument, we make our way to Wat Chedi Luang, probably Chiang Mai’s most visited temple with its imposing, huge, and characteristic chedi. An earthquake in 1545 damaged the chedi. The chedi underwent restoration in the early ’90s. It is beautifully illuminated in the evening. We will spend some time admiring this huge chedi and its surroundings. By this time, our stomachs will be protesting so we will head for the Chiang Mai Gate Market, one of the oldest markets in Chiang Mai. The Chiang Mai Gate is the entrance to the old city in the south. Outside the market, there is a lively evening market with food stalls. This is Chiang Mai at its best. Next to the old city gate, we will serve you a bowl of delicious noodle soup. We will keep some space for snacks later on.

The Warorot Market and the Night Bazar

We continue our samlor evening tour through small alleys from the Chiang Mai Gate Marketto Kad Luang aka the Warorot Market. It is a fresh and pleasant ride. Chiang Mai looks very different after dark. Most temples are closed at this time. At the Warorot Market, we walk around the small street food market outside the main market building. You will taste some of the traditional snacks that are for sale here. We continue our walk along with the colorful flower market to a Chinese temple where our samlors are waiting for us.

After this, we will slowly make our way to Chiang Mai’s famous Night Bazaar. Here your Chiang Mai samlor evening tour ends. Say goodbye to your drivers and enjoy wandering around the Night Bazaar on your own. You will have to transfer back to the hotel on your own. Thanks very much for joining this tour and supporting the samlor community of Chiang Mai. More things to do in Chiang Mai you will find here.
