Thaton is a small town in the north of Chiang Mai province. It is about 180 kms from Chiang Mai. By car it takes about three hours from Chiang Mai to Thaton. The town is located on the Kok River which is a tributary of the Mekong River. Thaton is really a stopover place on a journey from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai or other destinations in Chiang Rai province such as Doi Mae Salong. There are some nice resorts on the Kok River such as Maekok River Village Resort. The town is also the starting point of the boat trip on the Kok River to Chiang Rai. This trip takes about three hours. It is also possible to make a shorter trip to the village Pha Thai. Near the town are tangerine plantations. Wat Thaton is definitely worth a visit. From the temple you have a commanding view over the Kok River and the Chiang Rai mountains. It’s a bit of a climb but go there before sunrise. It’s absolutely stunning! From Thaton you can also now travel to Doi Wawee and Doi Chang and onwards to Mae Suay and Chiang Rai, an interesting route. The road has been upgraded and is really scenic. We can highly recommend an overnight in this friendly town.
