Si Satchanalai Historical Park is located in Sukhothai Province. It is located on the Yom River. The park covers the ruins of Si Satchanalai and Chaliang. Si Satchanalai literally means “City of good people”.
The city was founded in 1250 as the second center of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Si Satchanalai together with Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site called “Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns”.
There is an ancient road connecting Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai which you still can drive. It is a lovely back road with quite a few small archeological sites along the way. If you want to explore the ruins more extensively we suggest to spend the night in the small town Sawankhalok which is only about 18km from the site.
Sri Satchanalai gets far less visitors than Sukhothai Historical Park but is certainly not less interesting. The ruins are spread over a large area. If you have time you should try visit the more remote ruins. The only way to explore the main ruins of Si Satchanalai is by bicycle. They are for rent at the entrance of the park for a small fee.
Amongst the more well known ruins are Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, Wat Chedi Chet Thaew, Wat Chang Lom and Wat Chom Chuen. We highly recommend a visit to Si Satchanalai Historical Park.
