Teen Jok Textiles from Mae Chaem

Mae Chaem, the “Teen Jok” town

Mae Chaem is a small town in Chiang Mai province close to Doi Inthanon National Park. It is not on everyone’s itinerary but this sleepy town is certainly worth a visit. Mae Chaem is famous for its textiles. The Ban Thong Fai community of weavers produces a traditional sarong, known locally as ‘pha teenjok’. It is a traditional woven fabric in patterns and styles unique to the district. I bought some very nice shirts in the village, where you can find the weavers and shops.

A small and charming town

Not far from the town are two wonderful waterfalls: Mae Pan and Huay Say Lueang. They are on the way to Doi Inthanon. The road from Mae Chaem to Doi Inthanon National Park is incredibly scenic but very steep with many hairpin curves. If you drive yourself, be very careful. For those who are interested in Buddhist temple architecture the town has some beautiful temples such as Wat Yang Luang, Wat Pa Daet and Wat Ban Thap. There are some simple hotels and home stays and we certainly recommend to spend the night in this lovely town.
