Wawee or Wawi is a remote village in Chiang Rai province. If you are looking for an obscure and less visited destination, this is the place. Not much is known about this predominantly Chinese community. The good road from Mae Suay to Thaton via Mae Salak and Wawee used to stop at Wawee. After that, it was a very difficult dirt track. The road has now been reconstructed and is absolutely spectacular. The views are magnificent and there is very little traffic. It is certainly off the beaten track.
Wawee is really a forgotten corner of North Thailand and we are going to change that. Who doesn’t know the Wawee coffee brand? The coffee beans come from Doi Wawee. There are also lots of tea plantations around the town. To make it even more interesting there are villages of Yao, Akha, Lisu and Lahu in the vicinity. There is only one small resort in town: the Lao Lee Resort aka Laulee Resort. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-track destination this really is the place to go.
Doi Wawee is one of our favourite places. We highly recommend the overland route from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai via Thaton with an overnight at Wawee. The next day you will drive along a scenic road to Doi Chang and onwards to Chiang Rai. we doubt if you would meet other travellers or tourists along the way. Ask us for a customised itinerary.
