Explore Lampang Tour
Day 1: Chiang Mai – Lampang
Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel in Chiang Mai at 0830 for your Explore Lampang Tour. Transfer to Chiang Mai railwaystation. With your guide you will board the slow train that departs at 0930. You will pass Saraphi, Lamphun and the Khuntan tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Thailand. It is a very scenic train ride, especially the section in Khuntan National Park. This train ride takes you back in time. Since the opening of this railway in 1922 not much seems to have changed. It is a lovely ride.
At Hang Chat station we will disembark. This will be around noon. Our driver will be waiting for us. He will take us to Wat Prathat Lampang Luang, by many considered the most beautiful temple of Northern Thailand.
We will have lunch at a local restaurant near the temple. After lunch we will drive to Lampang. Lampang is much older than Chiang Mai and has some of the most beautiful temples of Northern Thailand. In the late 19th century Lampang was the centre of teak logging in North Thailand. There were at least 4,000 elephants working in forestry in the area. British logging firms were based in Lampang and brought with them many Burmese and Shan workers which explains the respective influences in architecture. There are some magnificent historic houses dating back from that period. After arrival we will check into our hotel. We will make a walking tour of Talat Gao street with its many historic houses. Your guide will tell you the history of some of the beautiful houses. We will visit the Moung Ngwe Zin House.
