Doi Inthanon – Mae Hong Son – 3 days/2 nights
Day 1: Chiang Mai – Mae Chaem
Your guide and driver will pick you up from the hotel for the trip to Mae Hong Son. Drive to Sanpatong.(*)
Continue to Chomthong where we will leave the main road to Doi Inthanon National Park. First stop will be the Mae Ya waterfall. We continue to the summit of Doi Inthanon. Along the way we will stop at the Vachirathan Falls.
Continue to the Karen village Ban Mae Kluang. Here we will enjoy lunch. After lunch we will embark on an exciting walk along the Paa Dork Siew waterfall. A local Karen guide will accompany us. After this walk we will continue to the summit of Doi Inthanon where will make a short hike through cloud forest. We will stop at the two chedis before descending towards Mae Chaem.
The road to Mae Chaem is lined with towering trees. We will stop along the way at two beautiful, seldom visited waterfalls. A short hike through the jungle brings us to the Mae Pan waterfall, the highest waterfall in Chiang Mai province.
Drive to Mae Chaem where we will stay at a homestay.
Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Overnight at the Chaem Muang House
(*) if departure is on a Saturday we will stop at the huge Saturday market in Sanpatong for half an hour.
Day 2: Mae Chaem – Mae Hong Son
Mae Chaem is a small, sleepy town in the shadow of Doi Inthanon. This morning we will rise early to visit a remarkable local temple. At this temple you will meet a local monk who will perform a typical Buddhist blessing ceremony.
Return to the homestay for breakfast. Drive to Khun Yuam. We will stop for pictures during our scenic drive. We will pass a couple of Hmong villages and have a cup of coffee at the Hot Coffee restaurant, a project of the Raintree Foundation. Continue to Khun Yuam, where we will have lunch in a local restaurant.
After lunch we will visit the Thai-Japanese Friendship Memorial Hall. This museum commemorates the presence of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War 2 but also focuses on the history of the “Tai Yai” of Khun Yuam. Drive to Mae Hong Son.
This afternoon, arrive in the small border town of Mae Hong Son, a city with Burmese, Thai and Shan influences. Enjoy a brief tour of this pleasant city, walking around Chong Kham Lake, a park-like setting with beautiful gardens and Buddhist temples. There will be stops to visit Burmese style temples like Wat Chong Klang and the neighboring monastery, and finally Wat Kong Mu, sitting atop a hill just west of town. The temple contains a beautiful image of Buddha carved from alabaster.
Overnight at Fern Resort
Day 3: Mae Hong Son – Chiang Mai
This morning we will visit the small local market of Mae Hong Son. Drive to a boat landing where we will board a local boat for an entertaining ride on the Pai River to Huay Pu Keng, a settlement of the Long Neck people. Your guide will explain about the situation of these gentle people. Return to Mae Hong Son by boat. Lunch will be at Fern restaurant.
After this you will visit some interesting Burmese style Buddhist temples such as Wat Jong Klang and Wat Jong Kham.
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Chiang Mai.
