Your Active Chiang Mai program starts with a day full of activities. You will explore the old city of Chiang Mai by bicycle. You will have to transfer yourself to the start of the bike tour.
Meet at the start of your Old Chiang Mai Bicycle Tour near Chiang Mai Gate at 0915. The bike tour will depart at 0930 sharp. After a quick fitting and briefing we start our ride through the back lanes and alleys to experience the modern Chiang Mai as well as the ancient temples. First stop will be Wat Chiang Man, one of the Chiang Mai’s oldest temples. King Mangrai, the founder of Chiang Mai, established the temple around the end of the 13th century. The temple houses a couple of very old Buddha images. Its chedi or stupa is called Chedi Chang Lom and contains fifteen elephants that seem to emerge from the structure. We continue to Wat Inthakin, the temple of the City Pillar. The City Pillar was moved in 1800 to nearby Wat Chedi Luang. The temple houses a 700-year old white Buddha statue. Next to Wat Inthakin is the Three Kings Monument depicting the kings of Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Phayao. Opposite the monument is the old Court of Justice.
Wat Chedi Luang is one of the most famous temples of Chiang Mai. Its impressive, restored chedi is massive and was the tallest structure in Chiang Mai for many centuries. Construction of the chedi started in 1391 to hold the ashes of one of the kings of Lanna. In 1545 the chedi was badly damaged. For almost 450 years the structure was left in dilapidated state until it was restored in the early 1990s. We continue to Thapae Gate, one of the five old city gates and the most famous one. Until its restoration in 1985 Thapae Gate was a real gate with a road passing through it. In front of the old gate was a fountain and a clock tower. It is always a pleasure to visit fresh markets. We finish this tour with a visit of the Sompeth Market where we stroll around for a while before turning back to the starting point of the tour.
From here you will have to transfer back to the hotel on your own. We will give you instructions.
The afternoon is free. Within walking distance are the Tonlamyai and Warorot Markets, the two most interesting and colourful markets of Chiang Mai.
