The Hall of Opium at the Golden Triangle

The Hall of Opium is one of the three flagship projects of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, alongside the Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park and the Doi Tung Development Project. The Foundation carries out its work according to the vision of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother. This vision promotes an integrated, people-centered approach to economic, social, and environmental development.

A short history of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation

In 1972, Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra founded the Hill Crafts Foundation to provide market access for craft-producing villages in Thailand’s northern highlands. She was the grandmother of King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X), the current King of Thailand. In 1985, the foundation was renamed the Mae Fah Luang Foundation. The name was bestowed upon her by ethnic minority communities in the region, who called her “Mae Fah Luang”, which translate as the “Royal Mother from the Sky.” The new name reflected the Foundation’s expanding role in social development, all guided by the Princess Mother’s philosophy.

The Hall of Opium

The Hall of Opium opened in 2003. More than just a museum, it serves as a powerful educational institution that highlights the devastating impact of drug addiction on individuals and society. The exhibition traces the long history of opium, beginning with its traditional use as a painkiller and sedative in ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. Visitors also learn about the First and Second Opium Wars of the 19th century, during which the British Empire pressured the Chinese government to legalize the opium trade.

Widely regarded as one of the finest museums of its kind, the Hall of Opium features high-quality exhibits and in-depth information. Anyone seriously interested in the history of the opium poppy, its medicinal use, cultural significance, and tragic consequences, will find it well worth a visit.

Two Opium Museums at the Golden Triangle

There are two opium museums in the Golden Triangle: the Hall of Opium and the privately owned House of Opium. Both are worth visiting, as their exhibitions complement each other and offer distinctly different perspectives and experiences.

Most visitors spend around two hours at the Hall of Opium, and with good reason. The museum’s rich, extensive exhibition is fascinating and best enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
