Angkhang Royal Project

The Royal Project is an initiative of His Highness King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It was founded in 1969 to solve the problems of deforestation, poverty and opium production by promoting alternative crops. It was the world’s first project to replace drug-crops with legal crops and is one of the most successful projects of this type. There are a large number of Royal Projects in North Thailand. Doi Angkhang Agricultural Station is one of the best known. Doi Tung Mountain in Chiang Rai province is another one. There are numerous smaller Royal projects such as on Doi Inthanon, near Mae Chaem and Ban Mae Sa Mai in the Mae Sa Valley. Visiting one of the Royal Projects is always very rewarding and educational. The lives of local people really have improved thanks to these development projects initiated by His Highness King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
