North Thailand is famous for its handicrafts and Chiang Mai is the center of handicrafts. There are numerous well- and lesser known handicraft areas around Chiang Mai. The area south of the Old City is the traditional silver and lacquerware area with temples like Wat Srisuphan and Wat Nantharam where you can see these crafts. Along the road to Bo Sang and Sankamphaeng there are still numerous handicraft shops such as umbrella, parasols, silk, celadon and pottery. Ban Tawai is famous for its woodcarving. We do our best to find unusual places that are real production centres and not only a small demonstration workshop with a store. There are lots of commercialized places that we choose to avoid. We have selected a large number of handicraft workshops where few tourists go and where you still can see the real thing without experiencing the pressure to buy. Please send us your request for a customized handicraft tour. We have the local knowledge.
