Chiang Mai a la Carte
It is less than two months away: the Loy Krathong festival in Chiang Mai and North Thailand. The dates are known: 7, 8 and 9 November. The full moon day is November 8. The last “normal” Loy Krathong Festival took place in 2019. The editions of 2020 and 2021 were forgettable events due to the pandemic. Last week I visited the office of the Tourist Authority of Thailand in Chiang Mai to get some information on the upcoming festival. The staff there told me that the TAT will publish the program for the Loy Krathong Festival on October 16. We are holding our breath. Let’s hope the parades are back in force and will see a sky full of lanterns again.Let’s hope that the 2023 edition of Loy Krathong will be a very memorable one. Chiang Mai a la Carte
The ruined city of Wiang Kum Kam is the most interesting archaeological site in the city of Chiang Mai. King Mengrai established this settlement in 1282 but the location on the Ping River was prone to flooding. Only 14 years later the King founded Chiang Mai, which became the economic and political center of the kingdom of Lanna. Over the centuries people abandoned Wiang Kum Kam, which was covered with sediment caused by regular flooding. The Fine Arts Department excavated and restored many temple ruins and developed Wiang Kum Kam as a tourist destination. A couple of years ago they improved the visitor center, which is a must-visit place before you start touring the ruins. You can visit Wiang Kum Kam by horse cart or by an electric vehicle, which is waiting in front of the visitor center. Cycling though is the best way, in our opinion. Last weekend we organized a bicycle trip for students from the United States to McKean Senior Center and Wiang Kum Kam. With thanks to our guide Bay, who took most of the pictures.Learn more ...
