Sukhothai Tours and Trips
We offer a number of Sukhothai tours that either start or end in Chiang Mai. Sukhothai was the capital of a kingdom of the same name. The Kingdom existed from 1238 until 1583. Historical artifacts have shown that Thai culture originated in Sukhothai, in particular the Thai language and alphabet. The ruins of Sukhotai are inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage under the name “Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns”. Those other historic towns are Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet. Most tourists visit the ruins of Sukhothai but those of Sri Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet are just as impressive if you are interested in history. If you have a bit more time you can contemplate spending a night in Lampang or Phrae on the way from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai or vice versa.
Lampang is also known as the city of horse carts. Lampang boasts some spectacular temples and many old teak wooden houses. Near the iconic railway station there is a 100 year old market. It is also possible to make a stop at the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, the only elephant camp that is managed by the government. The Asian elephant has been a symbol of Thailand for centuries and once even adorned the national flag. You can visit the only two elephant hospitals in North Thailand and meet some of the elephants. Phrae is known for its “gingerbread houses”, old city walls and laid-back atmosphere. Phrae is not on the tourist trail, even less than Lampang. Of course we can customise your Sukhothai tours “a la Carte”.
