Chiang Rai Tours and Trips

The overland route from Chiang Mai is a classic trade route. It is a very interesting route with many sights along the way. We recommend you to either fly in or out of Chiang Rai to avoid backtracking. If you don’t do that we recommend to take at least four days and take a different route back.

Chiang Rai Tours and Trips

Our Chiang Rai tours either start or end in Chiang Rai. The overland trip from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai or vice versa is very interesting and scenic. We really recommend you to fly in or out of Chiang Rai to avoid backtracking. Quite a few companies offer Chiang Rai/Golden Triangle day Tours out of Chiang Mai which is really not a good idea. You will spend more than a full day in a vehicle. If you travel from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai and you have to return to the destination we advise you to take four days at least and take a different route back.

We also offer day tours out of Chiang Rai. There are different ways to travel from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai and vice versa. Depending on the time you have you can make stops along the way or spend overnights along the way. The drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai takes a half or full day depending on the routing. You can travel the shortest way via Mae Kachan and Viang Pa Pao or take the more interesting route via Chiang Dao, Fang and, possible, Doi Mae Salong.

It is worth spending one or more overnights along the, again depending on the time you have. A very interesting stopover for the night is Doi Ang Khang, a mountain resort with interesting tribal villages and a wonderful Royal Project.

Alternatively you could stay overnight at Santikhiri on Doi Mae Salong, an ethnic Chinese community with a very interesting history, lovely climate and magnificent views. If you really would like to get off the beaten track and go native an overnight in Therd Thai would be worth contemplating. Therd Thai, formerly known as Ban Hin Taek, has an interesting history and there are a number of tribal communities that are worth a visit.

Another route could take you from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai via Phayao, a seldom visited but interesting town located on a lovely lake.

We have several special interest Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai tours that focus on tribal culture and on the history of opium cultivation and trade in the region. We can customise your tour as well.

Here are some of the Chiang Rai tours we offer. These tours can also be done in reverse order.

CMB01 Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai via Doi Angkhang and Doi Mae Salong – 5 days/4 nights Visit tribal communities and enjoy spectacular views
CMB02 Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai via Doi Mae Salong – 4 days /3 nights Visit temples, tribal communities and meet local people
